School and group Visits
School trips to the butterfly house
An excursion to the butterfly house provides an ideal learning experience for pupils of any age.
This butterfly house has specialised in giving educational tours around its exhibit. The combination of plants and insects provide a wealth of examples to complement school science and biology. The tours cover Key Stages 1 & 2 for insect life cycles, classification and living organisms. The hothouse atmosphere and giant foliage plants give a first-hand introduction to a tropical rain forest environment. Weather permitting, the trip can finish of with a bug hunt in the wildlife garden or neighbouring woodlands are also available. The tours are led by Neil Gale, a rainforest ecologist.
More advanced tours can be tailored to a special theme such as rain forests, conservation, evolution, ecology, etc.

School trips combined with the Hydro-electric scheme tour. Please note that next door to us, the Hydro-electric scheme owned by Statkraft offers free group tours around the station (Tel. 01970 880667). Some coach parties have found it useful to split in two and alternate between the two attractions making an environmental day of it. Coach parking, toilets and canteen (May to September) are available. There is also large playing field adjacent to the butterfly house ideal for picnics or simply a safe place for letting off some steam!
Celebrate among rainbows of butterflies busily sipping nectar and chasing each other to and fro. Children love our hot and humid jungle display where they can have fun and learn at the same time.
We can make up goodie bags with a selection of gifts from our gift shop as an optional extra for each child at £5.00 each. There is a picnic area outside and the field is ideal for ball games and frisbee.
